Royal Tea Wednesdays
All the buzz about yours and my favorite royals…
By now we’ve seen the photos of a thrilled Prince William and his son, Prince George, when England’s football (soccer) team scored first over the Italians at the European Championship final. The Italian team won in overtime, but even George managed to hide his disappointment fairly well. Seeing Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge rushing to Wembley from Wimbledon was sweet, and Catherine is as competitive as they come! The tennis-playing duchess watched the men’s final at Wimbledon, and I’m sure she hoped England would be the winner that evening in the soccer match.
Gracious even in defeat, many observed how rough Italy had it during the lockdowns and pandemic, so at least some fans waxed philosophical over the loss to a country ravaged by the pandemic. When English fans took to social media to write racist and hurtful comments about some of the black soccer players, Prince William called them out over their actions. That brought some of Meghan Markle’s fan base to lambast William over his supposed racist treatment of the biracial ex-actress. What a mess all over a soccer match.
Those who follow the British royal family know Meghan grew up identifying herself as a white woman. Understandable, since she lived with her white father, Thomas, until she left university. Meghan was reportedly treated very kindly by William and the rest of the royal family, because they wanted Prince Harry’s wife to feel welcome. Meghan even stated at times, and in her engagement interview, that she felt incredibly welcomed by the whole royal family. The Queen even hosted Harry’s fiancé at Christmas, and Meghan stayed with the Cambridge family at their country home, Anmer Hall, located on the Sandringham Estate that Christmas.
I’m glad to see the future king, William, taking charge over a tough subject such as race; and I’m sure Harry would back up everything his older brother is saying about being kind online; no matter what race someone is. Speaking of Harry, the interview he and Meghan did with Oprah has been nominated for an Emmy. The Crown and Bridgerton also were nominated in various categories, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Bridgeron will win. I watched that show while trying to rock and cuddle the newest and smallest member of my family, and the scenes certainly kept me wide awake!
I personally hope the Oprah interview doesn’t win simply because Harry and Meghan were caught telling a few lies in their time on camera with the ex-talk show host. I’m still trying to figure out why Meghan thought she married Prince Harry three days before her wedding. Most of us know when we married our current spouses, though a few might not remember the details. Royal weddings are tough to miss, so I wonder what Meghan thought she was doing that day before her wedding day.
Many royals showed up in the royal box at Wimbledon, including Zara and Mike Tindall who joined William earlier in the week, and a pregnant Princess Beatrice enjoyed a match at center court too. The Duke of Kent, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth, stepped down as president of the All England Club; and it’s thought that the Duchess of Cambridge will take his post due to her love of the game. That means Catherine will be the lucky royal who hands out the trophies next year. Her sporty family enjoyed the tennis this year; including sister Pippa and father Michael.
Tom Cruise was spotted taking a bow in the stands. In fact, after an austere year with little fun and no outings, plenty of celebrities joined the royals in watching the excellent tennis held last week. Priyanka Chopra, David Beckham and his son Romeo (who was with his gorgeous girlfriend), Hugh Grant, Sienna Miller and Pete Davidson were among the many celebrities who joined in watching the tennis action. Thankfully, nobody asked to have a whole section to themselves; which meant all the stars kept their star status in check and sat with other people surrounding them.
It was wonderful to see a happy Catherine join her husband in the box in time for the women’s singles final. And no, it had nothing to do with the players’ married status. Ashleigh Barty and Novak Djokovic won this year, and Djokovic is married. Back to the royal tea being spilled here, the royals do come out to Wimbledon in force, and Catherine seemed to enjoy being out after being forced the isolate after coming into contact with a Covid positive person. She wore a delightful green dress in honor of the color of the tournament, and Prince William seemed relaxed and happy. It’s great fun seeing the royals out again. It’s been too long!
Prince Charles is making news by reportedly not offering the Duke of Edinburgh title to his youngest brother, Prince Edward. Edward was supposed to be a shoo-in for the dukedom his late father, Prince Philip, carried. Some are speculating Charles is keeping that dukedom open for Harry, should he ever return to the family in Britain. Charles carries the title at the moment, but when he becomes king he will no longer possess it. I’m still hoping Edward receives that title, because he is a gem of a man and has helped out many times, along with his beautiful wife, Sophie Countess of Wessex. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see what happens then. For now, fingers crossed for Edward.
Oh joy! I just came across news that is reporting dear Edward will in fact become the new Duke of Edinburgh. I just love good news, don’t you?
Meanwhile, it appears mean social media users ravaged seven year old Prince George over his wanting to dress to match his father at the soccer matches. George wanted to enjoy the soccer action dressed like his idol, which is Prince William right now. I think it’s a sweet thing, and people should support children online; especially children who are out in the open for many to see. George was mocked for his looks and dress and excitement. So now William and Catherine are going to protect their child, who is a future king, from mean people making awful comments. Sigh. If only the royal children that live in Britain were treated nicely. Did the pandemic bring on so much hatred? Hopefully the very cute George will continue to do as he pleases and enjoy his time hanging out with dad William.
Moving on to other royal news, it is reported that Harry is being frozen out by all the royals now; including Princess Eugenie, who is a very busy new mother. Supposedly, nobody trusts Harry enough to talk to him, and while he was in London for the unveiling of the statue of his and William’s mother; Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth were busy in Scotland for the annual Royal Week. Nobody made an effort to sit and talk to Harry, likely due to concerns that their coversations would not be private and would be shared with his wife, Meghan, who was at their home in California. Harry left for the airport and flew home a mere thirty minutes after he saw Diana’s statue at Kensington Palace for the first time.
Princess Eugenie is preparing to have her son, August Brooksbank, christened very soon. Royal babies are usually christened when they are three months old, and it’s due to having them fit in the replica of the Christening gown worn by all royal babies that was handed down from Queen Victoria. The real gown worn by all of Victoria’s children is now safely tucked away, and a new gown was made; but royal babies only fit into the lovely ivory gown for a short time. That means Eugenie’s and Edoardo’s son will be christened in a private service soon, and the Queen and Princess Beatrice will be attending. Photos will be released after August’s big day. Seeing a royal baby with their parents is a treat.
As for baby Lilibet, the child of Harry and Meghan; she will not be christened in Britain. The baby born at the beginning of June would have to make a big trip to Britain within the next few weeks, and anyone arriving from the United States is required to isolate for five days due to the pandemic rules. Then Archie, Harry, Meghan and the baby Lilibet would be able to visit the chapel for a British christening. No photos have been released of the newest baby, Lilibet, and her name has not been added to the line of succession on the royal website. Is it because the child needs to be baptized first? The Palace is remaining quiet over questions about baby Lilibet, who is expected to make an appearance soon.
In the weeks to come, the royals will begin traveling to Balmoral to visit with Queen Elizabeth, while she spends her summer at the castle and surrounding area. The Queen is still mourning the loss of her beloved husband, but she looks cheerful when she is around others. It will be nice to see photos of the various family members who will make the visit to the Scottish castle. There the family enjoys cookouts, fishing, hiking and shooting, along with playing games in the evening. The Queen will make the trip to Balmoral soon, and the truly exciting part is that castle is now open to tourists from May until July!
The royals are opening some of their residences that were previously closed to the public. This is an effort to connect with the people, along with increasing their revenues. Everyone has suffered during the pandemic, and Prince Charles hopes by opening the castles his family will earn some money while being more accessible to the British public. I can think of one American who would be thrilled to see Balmoral. Maybe next summer I can finally take that trip to Scotland that was planned for this past May. My only dilemma is convincing my husband to go along. Well, I do have the better part of a year to make plans for this.
So there you have it. This week’s news on the royals. Hopefully, we’ll be able to see more of them this summer as things open up a bit more. I’ll pour the royal tea every Wednesday as long as there’s anything going on with the British royals. See you next week right here. And cheers to a fun week of royal watching!
